Our animal lover..

Our little animal lover has been asking for years for a dog. Every birthday wish has been for a dog. Many prayers have been pleading for a dog, some of those prayers mostly for our benefit no doubt. He even recently started a "dog walking service". (He charges $1 for a 20 minute walk. :-) Because of this passion, John and I have now debated a dog for months. We researched, and settled on maybe a Basset Hound. We've hemmed and hawed but frankly, we're just not up for a dog. One excuse is that we are gone too many weekends. We don't want to kennel a dog or take him/her with us every time we bop down to Menomonie overnight or take off camping.

When our little guy changed his tune a couple weeks ago and asked for a cat, John and I both thought "Ah Ha!" Unlike a dog, a cat can occasionally make it for a night or two on his/her own. So, when we saw this ad on Craig's list for 7 week old kittens, we were hooked. After careful consideration, we have given in to our little animal lover's latest wish. We added to the fish and guinea pig ("Charlie") and bought a kitten tonight in honor of Zachary's upcoming birthday!!

Above is a picture of our new addition. I'll let you know in a couple days, but so far so good. I went in to check on Zack tonight, and "Tiger Lilly" was curled up right beside his head. Zack told me that part of his hope was to have a pet to sleep with. So sweet!

Isabella is thrilled about the kitten as well. I'm sure she'll be dressing "Lilly" up in baby clothes before too long, babies being her passion. She was giggling and petting the little gray tiger so sweetly, and telling all of us to "shhhh...." when Tiger Lilly fell asleep in the car. She whispered to me tonight,"Mom, I will get to have Tiger Lilly all day tomorrow, but I won't tell Zack or he will feel left out." What a thoughtful girl!

Yay--another kitty friend! I'm really happy for you guys. A cat is a great starter pet--we, too, were not up for a dog at this point, but our Caspian has added tons of joy and warmth to our family.

Have fun getting to know your newest family member!

Love ya--Jen

Well, I guess you can start with a cat and then upgrade to a dog (say, a golden retriever or a yellow lab) when you're ready. We have some you can practice on any time.

I'm tellin' you right now, you don't want a basset hound. We have one and lovely and charming as she is, she is like having five more children. She sheds constantly, she smells like a hound, and she is stubborn. They are big dogs on short legs, so don't kid yourselves into thinking this is a small breed. It is a big breed with a small brain. Call me when you feel your resolve weakening.
